The former Mohawk Institute Residential School was unveilled on September 30, 2025, as an Interpreted Historic Site at the Woodland Cultural Centre in Brantford near Six Nations of the Grand River.

At least 4,642 children attended the Mohawk Institute over its 142 years in operation. Their experiences were fraught with loneliness, violence, hunger, fear and cultural assimilation. Thank you to the many survivors who stepped forward to speak about their torment, which was key to saving the evidence of the Canadian government’s treatment of Indigenous people.

My wife and I had the humbling opportunity to visit the facility, when volunteers and donors were invited in for a look around.
